Benefits of Spaying or Neutering Your Pet
(excerpts from PetMD.com)
“Making the decision to spay or neuter a pet means fewer will be euthanized,” says Dr. Kate Maher, Louisiana state representative for the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association. The ASPCA reports that approximately 6.5 million animals enter the shelter or rescue system annually. Of those 6.5 million animals, only an estimated 3.2 million find their way out of the shelter or rescue and into a home.

Spaying and neutering is also associated with increased health benefits and longevity including:

  • Increased life expectancy in females by 26.3 percent and in males by 13.8 percent.
  • Females spayed before the first heat cycle have a much lower risk of developing breast cancer later in life.
  • Spayed females do not develop pyometra, a very serious and often fatal infection of the uterus.
  • Male cats tend to spray less frequently when neutered.
  • Neutering male dogs helps keep them from developing testicular cancer.
  • Neutered male dogs are also generally less aggressive and less likely to stray from home.
